Declaring Theological Truth: Knowing God’s Identity and Your Identity in God
God has created a new identity for us in Christ. When we believe in the good news about God’s son, Jesus Christ, we receive our identity-in-Christ. From that point, we can choose to mature into our identity-in-Christ. But how?
The easiest place to start is to read the scriptures and ask two simple questions that will lead us to discover what God has already revealed about our identity in Christ.
The first question, “Who is God?”, seeks to answer questions like:
- Who is God?
- What is God’s nature like?
- What is God’s identity?
- What actions has God taken for us?
This question is necessary because if we don’t know who God is, then we cannot know who we are in him.
The second question, “Who are we in Christ?” seeks to answer questions about our identity in Christ. I’m reading and asking:
- Who does God say we are?
- Who am I in Christ?
- What is my identity in Christ?
- Who has God made me to be in Christ?
